Every weekday I will find something new and interesting to do with my kids, and tell everyone about our experience. These activities range from creative projects to great excursions. Ideas from parents and kids around the world will also be posted. Let's all learn from each other!KlineCreativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846958771924432329noreply@blogger.comBlogger18125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7848693402636021642.post-8719690243738242312011-07-08T17:22:00.000-07:002011-07-08T17:22:43.592-07:00Blast Off! - Cork RocketsWatching today's final launch of the space shuttle Atlantis sparked a million questions and re-enactments. My husband answered the questions and did this shuttle inspired project with the boys.<br />

If you use paint and your child is a little impatient while it drys, you can visit <a href="http://www.nasa.gov/">www.nasa.gov</a> and watch real shuttle footage and missions to space. The boys loved it!KlineCreativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846958771924432329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7848693402636021642.post-9452943587372728642011-07-07T16:43:00.000-07:002011-07-07T16:43:54.683-07:00Bowling ExcursionDid I say bowling? Yes, bowling. I haven't been bowling in years, but why not? Especially when you hear about this great deal My awesome friend Karin told me about this one. Go to:<br />
<a href="http://www.kidsbowlfree.com/">www.kidsbowlfree.com</a>, and sign up. I was reluctant, but it has been a few weeks now and no spam. This is the real deal. Choose a participating bowling alley, and they will send you weekly coupons for free bowling. <br />
<br />
Now, there is a tiny catch. Parents have to pay. After signing-up you will be offered a deal - pay $25.00 for unlimited adult bowling for the summer. This deal allows you to bring 2 adult guests. If you know you will always go with another family, just one family should buy the adult bowling. Then split the $25 fee, and bowl together all summer long - and never pay for the kids!<br />
<br />
Cheap, old-fashioned fun!KlineCreativehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13846958771924432329noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7848693402636021642.post-49876806821526108692011-07-06T18:35:00.000-07:002011-07-06T18:36:03.979-07:00Frozen Banana Cream Squares<style>

<div class="MsoNormal">Today we made these delicious frozen treats. These squares are easy, and very kid-friendly. By the way, the crumb crust is standard and can be made using any kind of cookie (including graham crackers).</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAcTc06BWJUrweEoFN0tR2MMAePdxBMnTymOJ8ug3JFYdbceAaTFuUqZTl7bkHllap5IZ5lmqnN3BHpCGI_nV1UOu9sATdJthVdbZmH3TB65SHbxZTlnNmNDfxhKmqVvaZIbRUwcMATko/s1600/bananacream10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiAcTc06BWJUrweEoFN0tR2MMAePdxBMnTymOJ8ug3JFYdbceAaTFuUqZTl7bkHllap5IZ5lmqnN3BHpCGI_nV1UOu9sATdJthVdbZmH3TB65SHbxZTlnNmNDfxhKmqVvaZIbRUwcMATko/s320/bananacream10.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Ingredients:</div><div class="MsoNormal">8 oz. vanilla wafer cookie crumbs (we used the Trader Joe brand and it took 50 cookies)</div><div class="MsoNormal">4 oz. sugar</div><div class="MsoNormal">2 oz. butter, melted + a little extra for the baking dish</div><div class="MsoNormal">2 3.39 oz packages of instant vanilla pudding (the Trader Joe brand is really good!)</div><div class="MsoNormal">5 medium bananas (after being mashed, about 16 oz.)</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Line a 13 x 9” baking pan with parchment paper, allowing the parchment to spill over the sides of the dish. Brush the paper with the extra melted butter.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Combine the cookie crumbs and the sugar. I like to use a whisk to make sure it gets all "mixed in". </div><div class="MsoNormal">If you eat these right out of the freezer, they can just be picked up by hand. Or, let the squares sit for a few minutes and eat using a fork. If you want to get fancy, top with a little whipped cream and drizzle with chocolate syrup.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Today, I made the bean-bag. Now remember, I cannot sew. I really cannot sew, not even a button. But, I made this bean-bag. As you will see from the picture, the bag is not pretty. I'm not worried. It will be dark. And I have to tell you, I threw this thing around and made sure that it stayed together. It did. If I can do this, you can do it better!<br />
<br />
First, I had cut a rectangle of material. I'm not sure what kind of material, I picked it from the "remnants" bin at the fabric store. Then, I applied several coats of glow-in-the-dark paint. I allowed drying time, in the light, in between each coat. My son helped with this, and thought it was just great.<br />
Today, I folded the painted material in-half and sewed two sides together. I didn't do anything fancy, like turn it inside-out. I folded the edges over and stitched. <br />
While I was looking for dried beans, I realized that we had none. I know, I have been talking bean-bags for 4 days. Well, onward and upward. We used dried lentils. It's a good thing I folded the material before stitching, lentils are REALLY SMALL. <br />
We poured the lentils into the bag (be careful, they run all over). Then, I stitched together the open side of the bag. We shook and threw the bag, and only 1 lentil fell out. <br />
Tomorrow night (July 4th), we will have a glow-in-the-dark bean-bag toss. If we end up with lentils on the yard, then so be it (will they grow?)!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR72UoBxC8jsAaZI5zrw6s_mOAwPsGr1V1Tjlw_RORLtQUO3DJK_6dqpfoQhx5XM31C1PEQmseYAP1Cd5lzPySl-Up8dHQeMgzIBUKtcM8d7dkwrl4xSF1uXi47hcCKmDkuWeeS_on9vA/s1600/beanbag.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgR72UoBxC8jsAaZI5zrw6s_mOAwPsGr1V1Tjlw_RORLtQUO3DJK_6dqpfoQhx5XM31C1PEQmseYAP1Cd5lzPySl-Up8dHQeMgzIBUKtcM8d7dkwrl4xSF1uXi47hcCKmDkuWeeS_on9vA/s320/beanbag.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Not pretty, but it doesn't fall apart and it glows!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal"> So, the Glow Sticks are great. But, I have struggled with the bean-bags. This time, I painted the material early in the day and sat it under light for 2 hours. I stuck to painting straight-forward lines and dots. Then, I painted another coat, the first coat had been mostly absorbed into the material. I again, let it sit in light. </div><div class="MsoNormal">I tried the painted material in a very dark room, with black-out shades. It glowed, but not as much as I was hoping for.</div><div class="MsoNormal">So, I added another layer of paint and let the painted material sit under light. </div><div class="MsoNormal">The material definitely glowed. Not as much as the Glow Sticks, but it glowed enough to see where the bag would land in the dark.</div><div class="MsoNormal">The material was too wet to sew, so I will stitch the sides together tomorrow. I absolutely cannot sew. I will stitch the sides together by hand, making sure that the stitches are smaller than the dried beans (learned that the hard way last Halloween!). After I sew together most of the bean-bag, I will fill it with dried beans. Then, I will sew together the last little part. I’ll update this blog with the finished bags.</div><div class="MsoNormal">Connect Glow Sticks into circles, and lie them out. </div><div class="MsoNormal">By the way, the Glow Sticks that I “activated” today were noticeably brighter than the ones from yesterday. For the ultimate glow, wait until the “day of the game” to activate. These are "activated" by bending and shaking the sticks, not by the use of paint. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

Hopefully, I have worked out the kinks for you. You will need:<br />
paper (a piece of printer paper is what we used, but get fancy if you like)<br />
scissors<br />
thumb tacks, push pins, straight pins or something like these<br />
crayons, markers and any additional decorating material<br />
un-sharpened pencils with long, firm erasers<br />
<br />
Gently bend a piece of paper in half. You don't actually want to crease the paper all of the way, you are only making a guide-line. Take the folded paper, and gently bend it in half. Unfold, and cut along the light guide-lines.<br />
After cutting, you will have 4 quarters of paper. Take one quarter, and follow the same bending process, except don't cut yet. Bend the quarter in half, then again. The light creases will show you the center of the paper.<br />
Take the quarter, and cut from a corner of the paper into the center. You don't want to go all the way to the center, imagine a circle in the center that is about 1 1/2'' to 2'' and stop at the edge of that circle. Start at each corner, and repeat. You will end up with 4 triangles, connected by a circle in the center of the paper.<br />
Decorate the quarters that have been cut to "almost" the center.<br />
Take the edge of a triangle on the quarter, and bend the paper toward the center. Skip the other side of the triangle. Go to the next edge, and repeat. Every other edge will be gently bent toward the center.<br />
Hold the corners together at the center of the paper, and push a tack (or whatever device you are using) through the bent corners and the center.<br />
Then, push the tack into the side of a pencil eraser.<br />
Ta- dah, pinwheel.<br />
<br />
What I learned:<br />
if the pinwheel is leaning against the pencil, it will not work well,<br />
if the paper is "folded" instead of "bent" it might not work well, <br />
if the tack is pushed in too far (to the eraser), it will be slow,<br />
if the tack is not pushed in enough, the wheel will fly off the pencil,<br />
there are small materials involved (tacks), so watch the kids closely,<br />

By the way, if you use left-over red holiday paper for the pinwheels - "hello", 4th of July! Or, make little pinwheels with patriotic colored paper, stick them in a vase filled with patriotic-colored rocks or marbles, tie left-over red holiday ribbon around the vase - "hello", 4th of July centerpieces! <br />

My husband did this with our kids, they used -<br />
<br />
crayons (with the paper pealed off)<br />
paper<br />
a leaf<br />
<br />
Put the leaf under the paper (bottom side up), turn the crayon on its side and color over the leaf. Continue moving the leaf (under the paper), and coloring. Experiment with different leaves. A million varieties of patterns can be made. Have fun!<br />

Here is the original solution:<br />
1/2 c. corn syrup<br />
2c. dishwashing liquid<br />
5 c. warm water<br />
Combine.<br />
<br />
But, I only had 1/2 c. of dishwashing liquid in the house. And, I didn't realize it until I started pouring the dishwashing liquid. The corn syrup was already in the bowl.<br />
Here is the solution that I used:<br />
1/2 c. corn syrup<br />
1/2 c. dishwashing liquid<br />
2 1/2 c. warm water<br />
<br />
We whisked the ingredients in a bowl. We took the bowl of soap, a baking dish, a slotted spoon, a spatula with holes and a plastic child's clothing hanger outside. <br />
Using the bowl, the results were not great.<br />
We poured the solution into the baking dish, dipped the hanger and "ta-dah" - success! <br />
<br />
I recommend doing this in the grass. On the patio, the bubbles left a little "trace of soap". Any "trace of soap" was easily cleaned with the hose.<br />
<br />

<br />
Today happens to be my birthday (yeah!), but party hats are always fun. Why not wear a party hat to dinner on any given Wednesday?<br />
We started with poster-board. You can use smaller paper, just make a chin strap. A little ribbon, a couple pieces of tape - party hat! If you're really feeling fancy, you can use some kind of material.<br />
Draw a circle on the paper. Then, make a little dot in the center of the circle. Draw a line that extends from the little dot, to the outer edge of the circle. Cut along the line. At this point we had to make decisions about hat size. Once you've decided how large you need the hat, cut another line extending from another exterior point to the little circle. Now you'll have a pizza-wedge size stray piece of paper, and a larger piece that is the beginning of a hat.<br />
Roll the larger piece into a cone shape, and make a mark so that you'll know where to stop decorating (where the paper will overlap after stapling). Then, go to town decorating! Our hats were pretty simple; markers, crayons, ribbon and some glitter glue (by the way, they're not joking about the word "glue"). We taped ribbon onto the top of the hat. Glue was not our friend today. <br />
Roll the hat into a cone, and staple. Party hat!<br />

I was not prepared, but I do love cake. Any reason to bake a cake, right? So, I went along. Fortunately, I have a super-easy basic cake recipe. You probably have the ingredients in your kitchen right now.<br />
<br />
The best part - there are no eggs in this recipe! Kids can help, and are encouraged to lick the bowl. <br />
<br />
This is a plain cake, but it's tasty and can be "dressed up" in ways I'm sure I haven't thought of yet. In this case, I ran out of sugar and used 1c. brown sugar with 1 cup regular sugar, (Please keep in mind that I am not a chef. So, I use words like "regular sugar"). Anyway, the only thing I had to "dress up" the cake was a half bag of chocolate chips. The other half of the bag mysteriously disappeared one night. I have no idea how that happened! After we put the batter in the pan, we sprinkled the chips over the batter. <br />
<br />
Here is the recipe -<br />

They clicked on "collections", and searched using the word "abstract" (no quotes in the search). Our son looked at the paintings/photographs, and chose his favorite. Then, my husband asked him to write down what he saw. He used single words, and made a list (with a little spelling help). Our son used his words, and created his own piece of art, incorporating what he'd seen. This activity can be adapted in so many fun ways! <br />
Best part: Looking through our son's eyes for a moment!<br />

When the kids were finished playing, I wrapped it in plastic wrap and put it aside. We broke it out again today. The good news is that it really held up. The color had changed a bit, but we got another day out of the play dough. The bad news is that it smelled just a little funky. Three days is the limit for this homemade play dough!<br />

Gather some corks, water-based paint, water and paper. Dip or paint the corks, then roll or press onto paper. Kids can create specific design, or be abstract. My son and a few of his friends did this today, and had a blast.<br />
Easy prep., easy clean-up and great when little friends are visiting!<br />

I have always avoided this one, because I thought it would be a big mess. Well, the mess was moderate and it was fun. Here is the recipe that I used:<br />
<br />
<style>
@font-face {
font-family: "Times";
}@font-face {
font-family: "Cambria";
}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }p { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }
</style> <br />
<div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">2 cups of baking soda<br />
1 and a half cups of water (divided in half)<br />
1 cup of corn starch</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">food coloring (we did 2 colors)</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">Directions:<br />
Combine dry ingredients and cut in half. Color each bowl of water with food coloring. Mix each half of dry ingredients with water and mix until the mixture is smooth. Boil each half until thick. Takes about 4 minutes each.</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"></div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">I think I over-cooked mine a little, so it came out a little crumbly. I added a little more water, and kneaded it into the dough. Play dough magic!</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">Best parts:</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">15 minutes of work</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">2 hours of play</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">moderate clean-up (I kept it confined to the counter)</div><br />
<div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">No bad smell!</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;"><br />
</div><div style="margin: 0.1pt 0in;">Let me know how yours works out! </div><br />

Today, we made a field journal.<br />
All you will need is plain paper and crayons. My son and I walked around the yard and made observations. With each observation, he drew a picture and labeled it (I helped with the labels). We plan to add to the journal throughout the year. A few staples at the end and "poof", field journal. <br />
The best part of this activity was sitting in the grass with my son. Have fun everyone, and let me know how it works out!<br />
